How Can I Turn Off Apps In The Background?

I have to always go into SBSetings to free up memory and close out apps that I long turned off. It's annoying. Is there a way to turn off these apps that are still in the background after I exit out of them?

do they same thing you do to run them in the background to stop running them in the back ground. I don't use it any more but I believe you just hold home button like you do to start backgrounding.
