I'm looking for the same answer and I've already been Googling around. It would be nice to hear something definitive.
I've seen this method but it seems that is generally recommended for those looking to NOT jailbreak their phones. I however have already jailbroken and thus don't give a flip about that; I just want the best overall method.
(Also, just to make sure, there isn't any additional charges correct? I've got the unlimited data plan with ATT.)

The best method, IMO, for 3.1.2 is in cydia add the source http://www.sinfuliphonerepo.com and search tether in cydia. Look for the enable tethering app for your specific device. Make sure you have not installed any custom carrier updates, it could have adverse effects. After installing the package from cydia it may require a reboot in order for the settings option to appear.
If you are using any firmware befor 3.1.2 then you can go to http://help.benm.at/ on your iphone and install the mobileconfig file for your carrier. It is a very user friendly site, you should no problems finding it in there.
Hope I Helped!
Good Luck!
As far as the charges go it is possible to have extra charges. I have heard stories of people getting charged. In my personal experience i have never been charged. I use my tethering quite frequently as well. I recommend only using it when you have to. Use in in moderation and try not to download large files using it. I typically use it for web browsing and it has caused me no extra charges.Last edited by ltjbigshot; 12-08-2009 at 01:38 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Thanks a lot bigshot.

I'd really like to get tethering enabled, and that site looks pretty straight forward. I'd be lying tho' if I said I wasn't a bit intimidated at the possibility of a mystery unknown amount for tethering.

Tethering is specifically excluded from AT&T's data plan (as it is from most others.
I don't know of anyone who has been charged but I won't be surprised if people do start getting charged (as happened in the UK and other countries when they had immature data markets and the carriers were working out what to do.)
What's wrong with the built in tethering? It's what I use.He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

I've not had much luck with the 1st part Apple tether. I don't what's going on, but when I flick the switch, the blue internet sharing info doesn't pop up or anything.
So until I get that fixed, I'm stuck with PDANet (which is actually a very good program, so I'm not complaining).
Anyone have any suggestions?

The built in tethering doesn't appear to work for me. I'm assuming it is this method? - [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVB_1BRl8oY]YouTube - How To: Enable Tethering in OS 3.0 on the iPhone 3G or 3GS[/ame]
I followed the video exactly but nothing ever appears in my "Network" settings.
I may try the PDAnet option when I get more time.
I'm still open to any suggestions tho'.

That mobile config in the video never worked for me, and i'm on a 3GS 3.0.1 also. As confucious said, get Stealth's; Guide: MMS and Tethering working with AT&T on 3.0 iphone.

I don't think I'm savvy or comfortable enough to attempt "stealthbravo"s tethering hack.
I did try the help.BenM.at – Mobileconfigs and Tethering for your iPhone | BenM.at option and it all installed just fine. However, when I plug it in to my Mac it doesn't detect the iPhone in the Network Prefs.

Like i said, it never worked for me. The option came available, but once i tried connecting to a Windows machine by usb, my tethering option in settings disappeared. Stealth's is not hard, just go step by step. All you need to is enter a command to allow ipcc updates in itunes, then just download his file, shift/command click update and choose Stealth's ipcc file. The links in this thread offer the directions, again, step-by-step. Try it, you might like it

You may have just convinced me to try it. I'll give it a shot tomorrow if I have a few minutes and post back with results.

On most plans tethering is prohibited.
I don't believe AT&T or O2 have actually charged anyone yet, but I do believe it's just a matter of time.
I have a plan that allows tethering, but then I'm with T-Mobile

Browsing through cydia I found a package you can download to get tethering working on 3.0 and 3.0.1 only. I haven't used it, but am assuming it changes carrier settings just like Stealth's .ipcc file. It's "Internet Tethering" and is on one of the pre-packaged cydia repos; BigBoss. Search, install, post results. Just letting ya know this if you really don't want to attempt the ipcc update through iTunes.
