Help, possible dead 3g

A friend called and asked for some help. His 16gug 3g "died" in his words. Apparently he had it charging over night. When he unplugged it, the screen went white and then absolutely nothing. I put one of my iPhones into DFU and he said that is what his did. He took it to one of the "geniuses" who took it in the back and returned to tell him it was dead. It has sat for 2 weeks now and when I plug it in I get absolutely nothing. While charging it has vibrated twice but nothing on the screen after being plugged in for 2 hours.
How long should it take before I see any activity. I have attempted to hard reset, plug in to my laptop to see if iTunes picks it up and so far nothing. Have tried to put into DFU as well.
Any suggestions or recommendations? Could the battery or possibly logic board be dead?

Could be the logic board. Check eBay for a new one. Worst case scenario: Sell the phone as is on eBay for parts. You can get some good money for it. After you have tried everything, if you feel like you need to sell it, let me know, I could use the back cover off it. Is it black?
