Default Iphone for bell - help!

Hey everyone, Im kind of a noob so bare with me please!

I recieved a iphone from my friend back home who is very much a genius with phones and computers and he is always cycling through phones ect.

This was probably about 6 months ago, however since then I moved away and no longer keep in touch with him.

I never used the iphone except for as a mp3 player because I am currently stuck with bell, but as of yesterday bell has released sim cards and their new network which Im hoping will let me use this iphone

Heres the problem, I tried using my other friends bell sim card (he has had the storm for months) and it says no service, but ive put in different sim cards (fido) and it works fine. to my understanding, this iphone is jailbroken so it should work with anything.

Is there some sort of jailbroken update or somehting for the new bell network which came out this week? Or does anyone know where I can find info on this?

because I really want to go pick up my simcard from bell (which apparantly is easy) but I don't want them knowing I'm going to be using a non-bell phone cuz they will prob charge me more or what not.

PS. I have no idea how to check what type of OS or wat firmware version I am using, and I have no idea how to check if the phone is jailbroken but I'm sure it is! So please help!

well, first of all you need to understand the difference between jailbreaking an unlocking. jailbreaking installs cydia on your device, which allows you to install third-party-apps. unlocking on the other hand removes the simlock from your device.

depending on what firmware you are running the unlock could be easy or more difficult to perform.
easiest thing: go into cydia (which should be installed on your device if it is jailbroken), then go to "manage->sources->add", and type in repo666.ultrasn0w.com (the 0 in ultrasnow is the number zero)
after that, cydia will update your sources. then go to search and search for ultrasn0w (again, a zero). cydia should find a package called ultrasn0w, install it, reboot your device, then try your bell sim card and see if it works.

your in luck, as current fw/bb is unlockable.. so it doesnt really matter what version you have..

But yeah.. the phone is locked to fido.. using blackra1n (or ultrasn0w if on a older BB) will unlock the phone to all carriers..

It is very nice that all 4 here in canada now carry the iphone/GSM.. although all their plans are the same.. lol..
