Default I've had every kind of error restoring iphone 3g now I'm close to giving up...

    Hi all,

Long story short... bought an iphone, restored it to 3.0 stock firmware and jailbroke it using redsn0w. Installed Icy and Cydia which I know causes problems.. but THIS many problems?!

I've had 1603 and 1604 as well as regular unknown errors (9 is a common one)my phone screen regularly goes white half way through the progress bar and apple logo on a restore, and i OFTEN get "usb device not regognized". I also regularly see "restoring iphone software" and the progress bar on the phone and nothing moves for a good 30 mins so I ctrl alt delete out of it. This is all on windows 7 and on itunes 8 and now 9... same problems.

I tried on my other pc which was XP. It crashed that and put it into permanent reboot. I'm now formatting it and losing all of my data.

I'm at the end of my tether.... help...

I would like 3.0 as I need to instantly unlock it.

    Thanks in advance

update, just tried simply clicking restore and risking a non-unlockable phone... still got unknown error (9)

update, ok I've just fully removed all apple programs as per these instructions:

Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

then reinstalled new itunes and got error 2005.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Follow the instructions on Apple's site to completely uninstall iTunes then re-install it.

Try a different USB port (after rebooting)

ok i've fiiiiiiinally done it. I did try several USB ports (5 to be exact) also 3 different cables. Eventually I must have found the right combination of USB ports, cables and firmwares. Unfortunately the firmware was 3.1.2 so it's now unlockable until the 4th of Nov, but at least its working...

haha the only problem is... i'm back to the issue I had which caused me to restore. Constantly rebooting itself. Nothing you know of would cause this would it? I'm going to ring the guy I bought it second hand off of tomorrow and ask for a refund I think.

If you've restored stock FW and it's still doing it then it sounds like a hardware problem

Once restored to stock, it doesnt matter if i've JB in the past or incorrectly installed icy and cydia etc does it?

ahhh after the constant reboot part 2, i went for another restore and I'm back to unnknown error (9) or error 1604. Been trying for almost 2 days straight now

The thing is... why SHOULD I have to get it back to a useable condition before I return it to the guy I bought it from... its not my fault the phone is knackered.

Incidentally I've tried 3 different cables so it can't be that.

edit: sorry i've just read you mean the internal cable. What makes you think that? Woudl that effect why I keep getting 9 and 1604?

he thinks that because he repairs iPhones for a living.
If that's what he says then I would be inclined to believe him.

thats cool, I wasn't being rude. Ok thanks, seems i've got a pretty good case to return it. I suppose the reason that I have managed to restore it once was just luck. It seems with error 1604 everyone says the key thing to do is just keep trying...
The most annoying thing. I bought the phone for a friend, wasn't even making any profit, now i've wasted 2 days on it and I'm going to have to take it back!

Melech, would a battery or cable issue also cause the 'restoring iphone firmware' dialog to just stop and progress no further (up to 60 mins until I give up and force restart).. same on the phone, progress bar just stops?

    thanks for your help guys

could anyone help. the phone is now stuck in DFU and I can't get it out. I can't restore because of unknown error (9).

Try holding down the power & home button for about 30 sec. this may kick it out of DFU mode.

It is not the 1604 error that bothers me but rather the error 9. You can try this as your last resort. It may work: iphone error 28

which part of that thread do you recommend trying? uninstalling itunes and trying with 7.5? or partially jailbreaking with redsn01? Tried the latter and froze on waitinf for reboot as you said, but as always, holding home and power does not restart the phone in any way

I recommend hitting the link and patiently waiting for the page to load. It will take you to the last comment in the thread which is written by myself....

hmm i posted a reply but can't see it. Which part of that thread should I try? The redsn0w part (does it matter if I untick cydia and/or icy as I don't want them on there when returning IF it does work) or the installing itunes 7.5?

I just tried installing itunes on a fresh install of XP and its been "restoring iphone firmware" with the white progress bar 2/3 of the way through (its now dimmed to grey) for 45 minutes... another failure.

Got 2 3G iphones out of error 28 messages today. The trick I used and what I am using:
    MBP on 10.6.1
    iTunes 9.02
    Redsn0w 0.8

I forced the iPhone 3G out of recovery mode into DFU mode while plugged into the computer. Then I ran redsn0w on the 3g. The jailbreak completed but froze on the rebooting screen after the process. I then forced the phone into a hard reset by holding the home and power buttons. Phone came back showing the recovery mode screen. I then restored the phone using iTunes and a 3.0.1 ipsw. The restore went all the way through this time instead of throwing the Error 28 message.

    Try that!

firstly appologies, i didn't mean to double post. My post started up page 2 of this thread which I didn't spot.

Thankfully didnt have to try what you said as I have now sorted it. In the end using a fresh install of windows xp I restored (not shift restored) whilst in DFU mode and on the 2rd or 4th try this worked....

    thank god that is over...
