How DO I Make Transparent Icons?

1) How can I make seim-transparent icons for springboard? Can I use MS Paint?

2) My icons are square and I'm using MS Paint. I'm trying to make them round. When I cut out the corners to make them round, and upload to my iphone, the "cut-out" hasn't disappeared... it's still there and rendered in black on springboard. How do I make parts of my icon disappear?

Use Paint.net, its free and has enough of the features of photoshop to keep you busy for a while.

yeah, or you can download GIMP, which is a pretty powerful freeware image editor ... but you still need to know what you do here!
