I love if people give really detailed information that helps other to help them.
so if my psychic abilities still work "error message signature or something" could be because you are trying to restore to something other than 3.1.2, which does not work for the 3GS

Hi I'm on 3.0 and I cannot restore it to 3.0 I have read somewhere else too 3gs iPhones cannot be restored

you can only restore a 3GS to 3.1.2

Why is that? You should be able to restore to same firmware

I've heard something like ibec and ibss what's all that about?

Also what baseband is 3.1.2 and can it be unlocked

3.1.2 cannot be unlocked, you need to create a custom 3.1.2 firmware via pwnagetool. do not be tempted to update to stock firmware, it will leave your phone permanently locked!

So if I restore to custom 3.1.2 I can unlock and jailbreak? Am on windows, Where can I get this file. Say a new firware comes out can I still restore to custom because like you say apple doesn't allow you to restore to lower firmware,am I on right tracks? So getting ibec and ibss won't be required?

you need access to a mac to make a custom firmware, sorry. maybe you have a friend who has one or something.
you can DL custom firmwares, but i wouldn't go for that, you never know what you get. worst case someone just uploaded a normal firmware and you lose your unlock.

if there is a new firmware you will need a new custom firmware to restore to, EXCEPT if you press the "make my life easier" button in cydia which allows you to restore to 3.1.2 even after a new firmware came out (on a tutorial how to do it search the forum or google for "cydia host file" or something, there are tons of tutorials).

as for the iBEC and iBSS ... it seems like they are not needed. I grabbed mine a while ago and you don't need them to make custom 3.1/3.1.2 firmwares, so ... . but if you have a custom firmware, you might wanna grab them while you restore, though I think that's only possible under itunes 8

"Some error message signature or something"...? More info would be great; are you trying to restore via a custom FW, do you have any other probs with your iPhone etc etc?
