Camera roll thumbs not working after restore

I've restored my iPhone and set it up as a new device in iTunes meaning the Camera Roll pictures were deleted. I then SSHed the backup pictures into /private/var/mobile/Media/DCIM which works fine, with the exception for the thumbnail view which is really messed up.

Any idea how I can fix that? Is there a way to make the phone rebuid the thumbnails? Thanks.

there should be a folder with .thm files in (don't know what it's called, sorry, but I think it's inside the camera folder) ... delete those files and I think the iphone will rebuild them

There is indeed a thm file, but I already tried removing that and it changed nothing. Must be someplace else...

Nope, I cannot get it to work despite deleting all files - anyone have other ideas?
