Covered by warranty?
So recently I noticed my iPhone 3GS's volume button was loose. I didn't really think much of it because I had heard that many people had the exact same issue with their right-out-of-the-box iPhone 3GS's, so I just went with it. A few days back, I woke up and took my phone out of my pocket and the entire volume button was gone! I have no idea where the volume button is, but I'd sure like it back.. Is this covered by the warranty? If not, how much does it cost to fix?

Shake the phone up and down. Do you hear something? It should be covered by warranty.

I hear something.. It's sort of like a faint clicking noise? What does this have to do with anything though? Not that I don't believe you, I'm just curious. Also, is anyone familiar with the Apple warranty policy? Am I going to have no phone for a while?

I asked because if you hear something it could be that the volume slider is inside the phone thus indicating that it may have been a defect in the phone.

if you heard that then most likely Apple Employees are aware of people coming in for the same issue.Android user suffering from iPhone withdraw.

Well in regards to the volume slider itself it very much appears to have fallen off. I can still get my nail into the divot where the volume button used to be and I can adjust it like that, it's just annoying and ultimately not in my opinion my fault but rather the fault of bad construction.

Walk into a Apple Store. Double check your pockets or the place where you were sleeping at for safe measure. If the phone doesn't have any dings or dents they'll know you didn't drop it.

I already looked but to no avail. My phone definitely has its share of scratches etc. but I'm fairly sure that I didn't break the volume button myself. Also, there is no Apple store local to me. Would I not be covered because of the cosmetic damage to my phone?

Just call apple support and tell them what is going on....You'll be fine. It is very easy to tell if a phone is damaged due to neglect or if it is defective. It is however difficult for the volume switch to just fall out. It would take some major drops and the actual button breaking to cause it to fall out. I say your chances are 50-50...
