try it again with a different usb port.
if not, then uninstall itunes completely...download itunes again from apple.com...intalled...reboot computer..then try restore again.
goodluck.

So first i downloaded the 3.0.1 firmware.
then i turn my iphone on then connect it to the usb.
then i hold shift and click on update and select the 3.0.1 firmware.
Is that right?Last edited by rwcblazer; 09-24-2009 at 12:05 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Try putting your iPhone 3G into DFU mode and do a Shift+Restore in iTunes using a stock firmware 3.0.1 for the iPhone 3G that you downloaded from Apple.
DFU Mode Step-by-Step:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Make sure you are running iTunes 8.2.0.23 or higher.
- Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode.
- Turn your iPhone 3G off.
- Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
- Release the Power button, but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
- Wait until iTunes recognizes the phone in DFU Restore mode (in Windows a bubble pops up saying it recognized new hardware "DFU Mode" or something to that effect)
- Press Shift+ Restore buttons at the same time.
- Browse to the directory where you downloaded the 3.0.1 firmware for your iPhone 3G.
- Select the firmware and press the restore button and cross your fingers for 5 minutes.
