iPhone 3g Warranty Help

Bought a 3G off ebay and the seller said after a faulty update the phone now continuously reboots and never reaches home screen. Anyway ive tried DFU and Restore Mode and no luck. Turns out phone is still under warranty. Does apple ask 4 a receipt or any type of verification to prove its that phone. The only proof i have is that the sim card tray has the serial number on it. I have no orig receipt and the phone doesnt boot so they cant go to the about section on the phone. Any help appreciated, either to solve it or with warranty dilemma.

Nope, the warranty is tied to the serial number of the phone... .the phone is all you need.
