Default Synch from modded 2G to 3Gs

Hi, Im new here from the UK

I have a small question, I own a 2G iphone running version 2.(?) software. The iphone is jailbroken so I can use it with Vodafone UK. I have all my contacts, photos, music, apps etc. synchonised with itunes and did a full backup on it.

Tommorow I'm getting a brand new 3GS with a new contract with O2 (the only UK network to use iphones).

I'm not sure what to do when I get it! Do I do a restore or will it give my new iphone the vodafone settings, ie safari internet and other settings. Would also this delete the newer apps like compass and MMS or merge with all my old apps. I used swirly MMs with vodafoneUK settings, and used a Gmail account through the phone.

I had Installer and Cydia with apps downloaded from them, what would my new iphone do to these and the apps download from them.

I getting worried if I mess up, is there a manual way to add the apps and contacts etc instead of restoring the whole phone.

Thanks in advance for any help. Cant wait to get me new iphone!

well, here is a general rule: sync your old iphone. this will backup all the official stuff you have on there. text messages, contacts, app data etc.

all unofficial stuff, so all applications you installed via cydia or modding you did, will NOT be saved by itunes. you will have to do that stuff again.

and - of course - you need to jailbreak and unlock your new phone. be careful NOT to update to firmware 3.1 via itunes on the 3GS. this is really important! wait for a MMi news on how to jailbreak and unlock it!

Hi Blackwolf, thanks for your rapid reply.

I'm starting a new contract with O2 the legit provider. Therefore, I won't be jailbreaking the new phone (too many problems with the last) so I can do updates etc. with the new iphone.
Do I synchronise or retore the new one when it asks or is it the same thing?

Sync only copies your iPhone data to iTunes, restore replaces and sets it up as a new phone.

Sorry I don't understand. When restoring the old backup, will my new O2 settings be overwritten with old Vodafone settings?

Basically I want everything off my old phone apart from the vodafone stuff, and everything that comes on the new phone including all O2 settings. Is this possible?

I take it my App save data will be lost in transit too?

your o2 and vodafone settings won't be mixed. the iphone keeps different settings for each carrier.

if you just restore from the itunes backup, your app save data will be preserved, as itunes backups those.

when you get the new phone, just plug it in. itunes should ask you if you want to set it up as a new phone, or restore from backup. choose restore from backup. that will bring back text messages, contacts, calender, app savedata etc. after that you can sync (or not sync) anything you want, like music, videos, ringtones etc.

Thankyou for your help. I received my brand new shiny 3Gs today but the home button doesn't do naff! Couriers coming to swap it in a few days!
    I've been so excited too!
