Buying Iphone from apple

In my area AT&T sells a 3GS for $299 with a new contract or some assine price, I think $599 without a new contract. Does anyone know if you can go directly to an Apple Store and buy one for the $299 without getting a new contract? I don't have an Apple store real close by to go to find out, but if so, it would be worth the drive to the closest one to get one.

^Yessir... They make sure no one gets out with the 299 tag unless they're locked in for another 2 years with the iPhone plan.
