Help for buying iphone 3gs

A friend of mine is going for vacation in USA . . If anyone knows can i buy the iphone 3GS from there without a contract .. like a gift...(for example) ?
Is there anything else i should know about ? and if anyone know pls respont fast. thanks .

try craigslist.org, there are always people selling iPhones.
Ebay too. but ebay is usually more expensive.
