The OP must have never jailbroken 1.1.1:

Make sure your SIM card is still in your iPhone at all time
On the activation screen, slide to emergency and dial: *#301# to make the phone call itself. (If the incoming call dialog quickly disappears but it keeps ringing)
Remove the *#301# and dial 0 (it will call itself)
Then, Answer the call, and tap on Hold (the phone will call itself again)
Tap Decline, you will at the normal dialer screen.
Tap on Contacts, and tap the + icon to add a new entry.
Simply key in any name, and add 2 URLs to the contact.
URL #1: prefs://1f
URL #2: AppSnapp - Brought to you by Conceited Software , then tap Save. (makesure your contact has 2 URLs)
Tap on the first one (prefs://1f) to get to the Settings Screen. (Configure your Wifi settings here, makesure your PC and iPhone sit in the same gateway and subnet)
Wait for your iPhone get connected to your Wifi (check the top right icon, there’ll be a WAVE icon if connected)
While you are in the settings screen, Set AutoLock -> Never. (this is IMPORTANT to avoid your iPhone go to sleep mode while jailbreaking your iPhone)
Then, press the Home button, and again, slide to emergency
Dial 0 and Answer the call, Hold and Decline the new call so that you get to the Contacts screen again.
Tap on your contact (the one you just added), and this time tap on the URL #2 (AppSnapp - Brought to you by Conceited Software)
Safari will launch and show you a webpage, scroll down and Click “Install AppSnapp”
iPhone will return to activation screen (the jailbreak process is running, so wait for it to finish), your iPhone will automatically reboot after almost 1 minute.
Once your iPhone rebooted, you would expect to see the screen showing “Slide to Unlock” (no longer Slide to Emergency), congras! Your iPhone is activated BUT not unlock.

Hell, that was the easy one. It only took 10 minutes or so. I remember sitting in front my phone on 1.1.2 waiting 45 minutes watching code scroll just so I wouldn't miss the ONE CHANCE I had to push"this" button or else I'd brick my phone. For a while they had no way to jailbreak that particular FW easily.

For the old school however 1.0 FW:

ATTENTION: READ EVERYTHING BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. This script will activate your phone and make youtube work.
TESTED with Windows XP and iPhone 1.0.2 Firmware. Other configurations might also work, post your experience here.

I've noticed that some folks in here are having a lot of trouble getting youtube to work, even though deleonju provided youtube certificate files that work great with Darkmen's Patching Activation method with no hassles. So, I decided to step in and give some help. What I did was to wrap up youtube's files and patching activation in a single "point and click" script, so you don't have to think too much to make things work. I haven't included the jailbreak part because the files are just too big and that would probably constitute copyright infringement.

ATTENTION: THIS METHOD ALONE WILL NOT UNLOCK YOUR iPhone!!!

HOW TO ACTIVATE YOUR iPhone FOR ANY SIM CARD AND ENABLE YOUTUBE

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Jailbreak your iPhone (Easy instructions in: http://ibrickr.com/ - Detailed intructions in: www.hacktheiphone.com)
2) Download and unpack this file:

3) Run the "activation.bat" batch script that is included.


UNISTALL:
Doubleclick "reverse.bat" (This will reverse what PACAY has done. It will restore your original files and leave in iPhone totally deactivated)


REMEMBER to kill iTunes before doing anything. Any doubts, check README.txt


You'll be given instructions along the way, but mostly you'll just have to watch. At the end, you'll hopefully have an activated iPhone with YoutTube working. The good part is that this method is SIM card independent. So you can put any ATT SIM in the phone (or any SIM for the folks that have done GeoHot's unlock!). This means that you can change SIM cards without having to re-activate the phone. Another advantage is that you won't have to install an SSH sever (dropbear), which some folks here are not willing to do. This is the first version of the script, pre-alpha if you wish. I'd appreciate any comments so the script gets really fool proof. I have tested this script with my own phone several times, so It should work fine. If you have any problems, post here. I did it under Windows XP simply because I don't have a MAC. Also, I think MAC people already have pretty nice tools. Anyway, if you wanna replicate this idea your own way, just do a patching activation, then copy deleonju's youtube files to /private/var/root/Library/Lockdown/ inside your phone.
