Buying Unsubsidized iPhone 3G S

Now I keep seeing in some places on this site that you can buy the iPhone 3G S unsubsidized at an Apple Store or AT&T store. I know there was a hack for Firefox a few weeks ago but Apple fixed it of course. So could you really go into Apple or AT&T and ask to buy the iPhone 3G S unsubsidized, full price without contract?

I'm looking to buy the iPhone 3G S 32GB Black which is $699.99 if I'm correct

Now out of curiousity why does AT&T/Apple Store let you do that now?

P.S. Is it one of them or both of them that allow you to walk in and purchase the iPhone 3G S?

Both. And they prolly figure they'll just make more money that way. Cause some people can only buy the phone unsubsidized.

Thank you! I've been trying to figure out these answers forever all over google and ModMyI before I decided to post about it. Oh and also, do you have to be a current AT&T customer (with proof) to be able to just buy the 3G S unsubsidized?
