    Default Gmail Push Howto

I finally got Gmail push on my iPhone. I have a Windows PC so here is the howto.

    Needed software:
    * Growl (FREE for windows) Growl for Windows
    * Prowl (2.99 for your iPhone
    * Gmail Growl Gmail Growl

Install Growl on your PC and Prowl on your iPhone and allow Prowl to recieve push notifications. You will setup Growl and add your iPhone under Network and set your login you crated. Install Gmail Growl and make sure it registers with Growl and configure your gmail.

You now will get new messages pushed to your phone and allow you to be notified instantly when you have gmail.

Only thing is that you need to have Growl and a PC running to push you the updates. Below is the image that includes Prowl (The app recieving the push), Gmail Growl (the app that send the Growl notification) - Test (email subject) test email (email content)

This isn't working for me... I've been trying to make it work for a couple hours now with no luck :-\

Push notifications are working fine from other apps, gmail growl sending the notifications, the notifications show up if i load Prowl manually in the iphone.... but they haven't pushed for me even once

Gmail doesn't support push on the iPhone.

I am using this method too, but I'm not too sure it's full-fledged "push" yet: on the Gmail Growl preferences page it asks you to set an update interval which can be a minimum of one minute. This means Prowl is pushing notifications to the iPhone instantly, but Gmail Growl isn't "pushing" new mail notifications to Prowl. Yes, one minute intervals are much better than the iPhone's default 15, and the closest thing yet to push, but this combined with the workarounds needed to set up the service shows that push still isn't actually here yet. Don't get me wrong tho, this is a great method, which is why I am using it and recommending it.

If you have your iphone jailbroken, you need to register in the prowl servers with the iphone in SAFE MODE

Interesting... how do you force your phone into safe mode?

I have tested this method with a jailbroken iPhone and using a cracked version of Prowl to see if it even worked before I bought the app. It did work fine without doing anything special.

The functionality is great and I am really curious if this is all we are going to see for Gmail push because it takes away the reason to buy MobileMe if an app store application came out that did it.

It wasn't working for me the day Prowl came out. But I didn't register in safe mode either.

Ah yes... when you log in with safe mode it gives you the option to turn on all your push notification. I wonder if GriP and Prowl will play nice together...

Can someone provide a reasoning why you need to be in Safemode? I have this working without it.

It does not work with some jailbroken devices. Like mine.
