This has probably been asked a thousand times before - my apologies in advance.

If I download a restore file (ipsw) where do i put it so i can actually use it as a .ipsw? (the packages don't have *.ipsw files as such but a whole lot of bundled software) I can only presume that itunes does something with it so u get to see the ipsw file it wants?

Not exactly sure what you're asking, but I'd suggest you just download it to the Desktop so it'll be easy to find when you shift+click restore.
