3gs took a splash, reactivating old iphone question

ok heres the deal, i got pushed into a pool about a day after getting my new 3gs so now i need to reactivate my old iphone first gen. can i do this without going to at&t?

i have the sim from my 3gs in my old phone but it shows the itunes plug in with the call for emergency slider.

when i go into itunes it starts me through the whole register process and i dont really want to pay for 2 contracts.

does anybody know exactly how all this works? any help is greatly appretiated.

You shouldnt have to sign another contract.
