To answer both the original question and yours, I'll try to be brief. I called customer service today because I have the same issue and they are useless, told me to go to an att store because they could not unlock them. When i got to the store they said that customer service was lying, so we called customer service/611 in the store and they said (dif rep) that I could get a new sim card in the store and that my balance would transfer. usually this costs 20 bucks, but because i made a big deal they did it for free. So to sum up
1. 611/ customer service is of no help
2. Stores can give you a new sim card unlocked, which should work in any phone,
3. Balance will transfer
4. Cost 0-20 depending on how much of a fuss you give them
5. last but not least dont tell them its an iphone, I told them it was a razor
