They appear to be exactly the same. I'm gonna try it.

I had the same idea a few days ago and wrote a mail to a shop. They are not compatible.
I´m talking about the new 3GS digitizer and an 3G iPhone. I wrote them a mail and asked them to be sure, but they say it on their website also.
Here is what I wrote and their reply:
"Can you give me a short explanation, why the new digitizer [from
the 3GS] doesn´t work with an 3G iPhone? With the new "clean-film" on it, it
would be great. Did you try it or do you suspect it not to be working..?
Thanks in advance."
"Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry.
That would be a great question for Apple, we do not know why they made them
differently, but they are not compatible."
Am I allowed to post the Link here? If so I can do.
If somebody wants to try it anyway and maybe finds a solution, I would be really interested in havin it. But I will not try it, as it will probably not work/fit from itself.

The digitizer is seperate from the glass screen. it is the glass screen with the coating.
If you buy a 3G digitizer and then buy a 3GS glass screen and apply the 3G digitizer to the 3GS screen it should work? The Original Autobot of MMiJesus couldn't turn into a fire engine

Actually you cant buy the digitizer separately from the glass because the digitizer is too fragile to handle. The part comes together.
I'll do some checking but Im willing to bet even though Apple may say the part is not compatible....it probably is....
I could yank mine off and stuff it on my 3g....hmmm, if I feel frisky.

But you can buy the digitizer + glass seperately? Or are they completely useless seperated?
Ok, did some research, i thought the digitizer was just a sought of clear film under the glass but i guess not.
CPJR your just gonna open it up eventually anyway! It won't even hurt your warranty wack the front off and try it on the 3G quickly.......Last edited by reeko; 06-29-2009 at 05:30 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Lol. I looked at a parts list for the 3g vs 3gs.....they "look" identical, so unless they changed up the ribbon cable (highly doubtful, but possible) then it should work.
Havent gotten frisky yet, actually just using my phone alot right now

Yo, CPJR, i couldn't resist. I opened up the 3GS and tried it on a broken 3G ive just got. The connectors 1 + 2 both on the mainboard and on the front panel are completely different.
Even the LCD is different for some reason??
I thought i'd take some pictures of the 2 side by side while they where open:
MobileMe Gallery
As you can see, the home button pressure connectors are now larger, the back of the home button had black tape on it, none of the 3G's ive ever opened have, the sim tray had a much smaller print on the main board, and the 'DO NOT REMOVE' sticker has moved (now going to go to ifixit and find out where it is)
The 3G doesnt work with the 3GS and the 3GS doesnt work with the 3G just to clarify, didnt make that to clear.Last edited by reeko; 06-30-2009 at 02:21 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Wow....good show.
The ifixit.com pics I looked at you couldnt see the bottom side of the connectors and everything "looks" the same....Up close big difference.
Why they had to change that all around, guess only Apple knows
Glad to see the connectors for the home button are larger....vs. the POS ones on the 3G...couldnt tell ya how many of those I had to fix.

Ive had a couple where they wouldnt bend up enough to touch the bottom of the front, so try and pry them up a little and ping its gone, and as soon as you remove the little black plastic bit to replace the flex its gone for good

The glass/digitizer i can understand, it kind of serves a purpose as another reason to try and force people to upgrade, but the LCD? Why does that have to be different?
And the DO NOT REMOVE sticker is under the new connector 7 but im sure you picked that up on the ifixit pics.
CPJR i am serious, ifixit and that do tear downs and guides etc, but there are so many fiddly bits that arent explained anywhere i.e. top speaker removal. You should do a complete guide, bare bones, macro lens and guide for every last bit...The Original Autobot of MMiJesus couldn't turn into a fire engine
