Cydia questions

Hi. I restored my iphone to 3.0 and installed cydia and icy, but i figure i probably wont use either really so my questions are...

Does cydia have any other affect on the iphone beside installing apps? eg. does it consume resources or something while not running? Other than install apps, does it provide any other benefits? How much space does it take up on the iphone hdd? Is it required to complete the jailbreak/unlock?

Cydia is about apps that can mod your phone, host repos, does not run in the background to consume resources.
It is not required for jailbreak but is for the most part the reason people Jailbreak their phones. Go for it, you'll love it.

Is it possible or has cydia been known to slow down the performance of your iphone?
