Default UK People - Buying a PAYG 3G S in an Apple Store

Guys, just been onto the Apple site to check availability of handsets at my "local" store in Birmingham (1 hour away by train)

    It states:

What You Will Need to Bring:

    Pay & Go plans:

UK credit or debit card (with account number and sort code)
PAC code from your current network if you want to keep your existing phone number with O2

Is this correct - I have the cash all ready to purchase - but why would I need a card for a PAYG phone?

I can't just walk in and pay cash for the handset?

I would call and ask them to get the correct answer.
