Does the compass feature in Maps only work when driving on 3GS?

hey guys, just got my 3GS and was playing with tthe features while i was walking around today, but for some reason the directional feature wasnt working on the maps (auto rotate and so on) . is there a way to enable it or does it not work when walking?

The compass is activated in the maps app by pressing the locate me button twice, once to bring up your position and twice to activate the compass. You can also activate it through the compass app itself.
