quick question about downloading 3.0 on windows?

ok so i wanted to download the 3.0 software to keep on my computer for when it comes time to jb and unlock and such...but i'm getting alittle confused, every copy of the 3.0 i've downloaded once i extracted the zip i'm just getting the dmg file stuff...now my question is, is when i download the firmware instead of unzipping the files, do i just change the file extention of the original .zip file to .ipsw? i mean that creates the cube file i was looking for...is this correct?
