Can i use my old 1g iphone as a ipod?

So i purchased a 3gs, now i have 2 iphones. I wana use my old 1g for the gym as an ipod. The problem is now that i get the screen showing to connect to itunes and only use for emergency calls. Is there a way to get around it?

Just connect it to iTunes, click restore, and activate it with your sim. It should work fine as an ipod without a sim in it. You don't even really have to activate it if you don't want to; but if you don't, you'll get a message from time to time asking you to activate.

and just keep it in airplane mode to avoid any unintentional network useage.

thats what i did with mine named it music phone filled it with tunes and games,,,

You don't HAVE to keep it in airplane mode if you don't have a SIM card in the phone because there's no way to send/receive data other than Wi-Fi without a SIM card.
