Got the exact same problem here! Except mine's a 2G and didn't do it until I did the 3.0.1 update with redsn0w. I was taking pics with ClearCam and the last one went all screwy with multicolored lines and crashed the app. Tried to open the default Camera app and same thing. Now ClearCam won't even open and I get the shutter with Camera.app. I figured my camera just died in my phone but mighty fishy that the same thing happened with yours.
What is the normal response of an iPhone to a broken camera?
Lots of people with the same problems on the Apple support board:
Apple - Support - Discussions - camera shutter stuck on iPhone3G ...
Found this too, somebody's saying the camera cord was dislodged from the motherboard. Maybe that's the solution, but I'm too scared to open mine up.

What's in these files, because wouldn't my phone be wiped clean with the two restores I've done thereby giving me a fresh start with each one? It's gotta be hardware-related, right?

sry couldnt help but glad apple finally came around...
and if ur iphone is restored then u shouldnt wry about it being cuz u lose all jailbreak data + apps anywayz...so a restore is fine..
On a nother note...what if all these "problems" on a 2G is something apple is cooking up so more ppl just buy the 3GS...lol IF that were ever true, then shame on apple!

Alright. Bottom line. If the camera is not working after a restore there is a problem with the hardware. If you completely wipe the software from the phone, restore it and its still not working. Your camera hardware is boke.
I had a problem with this once. I jumped into a pool with my phone. after a week everything was working fine, except my camera. I would start it and the shutter would stay closed. I paid the 200 dollar water replacement fee and got it replaced.

Can I take my unlocked 2G in without a SIM and get a replacement from the Apple store for $200? I bought it off eBay, I never purchased it from Apple. I can restore it to the legit software, but it won't be activated. Do they even care?

What is sbsetting ???
Tried to delete folder apple100 ... did not work.
What a major issue, I have talked with 4 iPhone 3Gs owners and 3 of them do NOT have a working Camera.
Apple asking people to bring in Iphones for replacement is really lame too.
They need to test better and be able to fix these on the spot.
Mr Jobs, give me your iPhone with non-working camera and I'll give you another one which may or may not work better.

Hey there everyone new person here. I did SSH in and can't even find the file apple100 to attempt to delete and fix my camera issue.
I own a 3GS, but the phone I am working on (bad camera) is a 3G with OS 4.
I tried to restart, reset settings, replaced camera with another one, so it must be a config issue.
Any suggestions?...Last edited by playboyjenna; 09-09-2010 at 06:31 PM.

The fix for this is to delete the file located here:
/User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist

iPhone camera not working -fixed
I had the same problem and have now fixed my phone. It turned out to be a loose connection between the phone mainboard and the camera connection.
I very carefully removed the mainboard from the phone and then the camera. Then instead of trying to fit the mainboard to the camera, I reconnected the mainboard and camera then fitted both back into the phone. Hey presto my camera now works again.
This is not a fix for the faint hearted, you will need a very small philips screwdriver and nerves of steel as you prise the screen out.
I take no repsonsibility for this advice but it worked for me. Please show your appreciation by viewing snaptease.com
Good luck
