Why do you jailbreak??
I have had a jailbroaken iPhone from the beginning. At first I used all kinds of things that you could only get when having a jailbroaken iPhone. But yesterday as I was debating upgrading to the new 3.0 os I took a moment to think about the reasons I still jailbreak my iPhone and this is what i came up with.
First Winter Board. Why on earth doesn't the wall paper show up on the springboard?? wtf!!
Second Mobile Terminal. I am a network engineer and let me tell you when something is down it's sweet to be able to ssh or telnet into a router and fix it from my phone.
I know there are other ssh / telnet apps out there in the app store but you have to set up bookmarks in all of them. with over 200 network devices that's just not going to happen. and all the swipe commands that are in mobile terminal are sweet.
Third Clippy. But that's not needed with the addition of cut copy paste in the 3.0 os.
And that's it. I kept thinking there was something else but really it's just the two things, and two simple things at that. It can't be that hard to create an app just like mobile terminal that only does ssh and telnet and whatever else apple will allow. And come on apple a wallpaper that doesn't show up on the desktop "spring board". I would guess the #1 or at least top 5 reason to jailbreak an iPhone would be themes. What's your reason?

Biggest feature I'm missing now that I'm on 3.0 is SBSetting for quick and easy access to brightness settings, and turning on and off bluetooth and wifi.

Agreed. I miss that little drop down menu. So much easier.

Good thoughtful thread knowram.
We have all JB'd since the beginning for many reasons. Over time, apple "the death star" has wondered why we JB as well, IMO.
They have studied our own apps and overtime released FW updates which incorporate functions that were our primary reasons for JB'n in the first place (unlocking, tethering, mms, THEMES, SSH, custom sounds, search/command utilities, copy/paste, and i would like to add a place for us to get apps that the death star will not approve of).
I guess, eventually, we won't have a reason to JB. Another 3 or 4 years anyway UNLESS somebody else releases a phone that is just as cool as the iphone and does everything the BB does + suck your ****. Slowly but surely, apple lets more slack on the leash as far as allowing the iphone to perform more functions. I will never get why they restricted the ability to view the file system in the iphone anyway, or bluetooth for that matter. The first time I hooked my phone to my comp and went to the my comp folder and was like "why the **** isn't the phone showing up here?," I began to realize that it was all about control. They wanted the user to have no way into the phone other than through itunes. Itunes was the gateway and only stuff that was purchased through itunes would be "allowed" to be installed on the iphone.
Then on the other end of the spectrum, we have ATT, those ******* dicks with their monopoly on the iphone. Acting like they managed to fit 4 of those big *** red hotels on boardwalk. "#$@!" is what you think when the dice stop. And boy does ATT put it in deep. Hell apple (finally after two years of complaints) has offered us the ability to tether and MMS now but ATT is ******* shittin their pants and stalling just trying to figure out a way to fit that 5th hotel in just to make us pay more. Whatever it takes to make their epeen grow.
Far as I'm concerned, my current "unlimited data plan" can stay that way. Hell, technically, moreover LEGALLY, SMS/MMS is DATA TOO!! Otherwise I would love to find enough people to take suit against them for misrepresentation, false advertisement, and whatever else we could think of. Perhaps imposed sexual harassment and mental anguish cuz every single ******* time I turn around I got their epeen laying across my yard, looking in my window and ****.

For SBSettings and theming (sometimes). And to hide some of those useless Apple stock apps like Contacts.

I'm missing quick reply the most! I need iRealSMS back on my phone!
Then SBSettings. I could live without SBSettings, but having to go to the Messages app to reply to someone is really annoying. If Apple ever implements quick reply themselves, I'll probably never jailbreak again. I don't need Processes any more because I have so much freaking RAM now and I don't really need Backgrounder any more because I don't listen to any radio apps in the first place and with push and a faster processor, IM will work great now. Apple needs to approve the Beejive update already!
I don't need PdaNet any more, because I get free tethering provided by Apple, but it would be nice for a tethering toggle in SBSettings.Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?
If I helped you, be sure to press the Thanks! button over there ->
If I didn't, press it anyway.

I just found another third party app I thought I would share. Inspell is probably the most useful app yet. Giving you true spell check where a miss spelled word is underlined in red just like in word or any app on an apple.

X2 for hatin on the man! Ireal quick reply is definitely at the top of the list alongside being able to have mms (like my crappy 20$ samsung) and sbsettings. Everything else I've gotten from cydia is just icing on the cake

Also to get the full potential out of my device. I don't like full-on themeing but I like to tweat the look of my iPhone so that it's slightly different to stock iPhones. Plus, Cydia devs are restricted to Apple's nazi rules so we get better apps
Jailbreaking is worth it JUST for SBSettings alone!

I use Winterboard, Open SSH, and Categories all the time. I'm surprised that Apple hasn't jailbroken an iPhone for themselves to figure out what they can do with it. Also I use SBSettings to turn off Edge so I don't have to pay for data.
