two iphone account upgrade question

I have two iphones on my account, one wife's and one mine. My wife's phone show's eligible for the discounted upgrade to 3GS and mine doesn't. I want the 3GS(wife doesn't care). So can I go ahead and order the 3GS based on her phone upgrade, but when I get it just activate and put my SIM in without affecting her phone?

It could be possible just to switch the sim cards, I was in a similar situation but the other line was a razor. I went to the ATT store and asked them if I could take the lines upgrade to get the new iphone. They told me yes and that they would just activate the phone on my line. I was able to preorder to get my phone friday
