iphone 2g passcode/recovery mode issue

I found a 2g iphone in a gas station last week. I would like to use this phone but the problem is that it has a passcode lock. I have no way of knowing what firmware it is. I know that it is below 2.0. I have tried holding down home and silent then releasing silent while it reboots but it never sends it into recovery mode. I tried downloading DFU.zip and running it but nothing happens. Does anyone know how i can get this phone into recovery mode or whatever just so i can update it on itunes with 2.2.1 firmware and use it? I could care less about getting any info on this phone all i want to do is be able to use the phone. Also i hooked it up to qwkpwn225 thats how i know its on a lower then 2.0 firmware.
