iPhone 2g touch screen doesn't work after waking from sleep mode

hey guys i'm looking for some help...

i bought an iPhone off a friend that he some how damaged, the touch screen doesn't work after waking from sleep mode.. in order to get the screen working you need to wake it, put back to sleep (top bottom) and wake again. after that the touch screen works perfectly.. I'm not 100% sure what he did, either he didn't disable auto sleep during an unlock and went into sleep mode while unlocking.. or his computer (or) iPhone froze during an unlock attempt.. as far as i know he tried everything he could think of to fix it including a full dfu restore and various firmware upgrades but nothing as seem to work.. if anyone can help with some ideas or anything at all it would be greatly appreciated

no one has any advice, or ideas to try? its gotta be a software prob.. is there any files that i could replace via ssh?
