New Computer

I have searched, and found no definitive answer to my questions, so please help.

First, my motherboard blew capaciters, and have no access to my old HDD.

Second, I have a iMac 10.4 Intel 2.0 Core 2 Duo.

Third, Can I plug in my iphone into the mac and be able to recover the pictures on the camera roll, and all other SMS, notes, etc. and then use the mac from now on to sync my phone?

I do not need to worry about contacts and calendar, since i use google to sync those.

OK, So i used iPhoto to import my photos off the camera roll, I hit sync, and it barely did anything (less than 5 seconds). I don't believe it actually synced anything. How can I tell? I'm not too familiar with mac, so where is the location of the iPhone backup file on them?
