Orb vs. Slingplayer, which one is right for ME?
Read before you post.
I have a 2.4Ghz comp that apparently isn't fast enough to stream Orb, it constantly buffers no matter how I tweek the settings. It just cannot keep up with the encoding. Or my internet speed isn't up to par, but I have the fastest my cable company provides.
I need to either get a faster PC or invest in a Slingplayer. Either way, I'm spending money, but it looks like maybe the slingplayer is cheaper. I do already own the Orb App, but if I can't get it to play correctly there is no use for it.
Should I get the Slingbox?

What's the speed of your cable?
I'm running ORB on my old 2Ghz computer with no problem. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

Well Buddy, I would have to tell you SLINGBOX is the Bomb. Had ORB and had nothing but problems. I bought the Slingbox SOLO, hooked it up and had no problems....I LOVE it.

If this helped hit the thanks button>>>>

I tried Orb but it just seemed buggy.
Ive got 2 slingboxes, one on an Apple TV and one on my skybox
Your upload speed needs to be above about 300kb to stream sling without 'optimizing' constantly.
go to speedtest.net or any speed website and find out what your upload speed is.
However, allot of people swear by orb - i just found the quality to be much less than sling and the mac sling software right now is better than orb for my needsThe Original Autobot of MMiJesus couldn't turn into a fire engine

I find Sling Player Mobile to render better video quality than Orb, especially over wifi. NFL football, for instance, is much smoother and shows fewer artifacts during fast scenes.

I think reeko made a valid point about the Mac s/ware for Orb maybe not being as polished as the PC version which might affect your decision but no one has mentioned the major difference.
I use Orb to watch / listen /view what is already on my computer (I don't have a TV card) whereas a Slingplayer is to watch live TV (or recorded on your pvr) so while you can watch video on your phone via either, they are really two different things. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. Ahhh confucious, thats what i thought aswell

The composite+component inputs on the slingbox can be used to stream any video/audio signal. The slingbox is only limited in what it can control over infared.
i.e, ive said it before, but i have an airport base station with a usb hard drive on it with all my films/tv series/music on it. i have hacked my apple tv to be able to read and play all these files with no computer on the network active. i can then remotely connect to my apple tv over slingplayer and watch any browse my whole server. the slingbox has options for any mac with an apple remote (hello frontrow), xbox 360, loads of things.
but my slingplayer has stopped working over 3g right now

I saw your post about the Xbox360 - pretty neat!
No one has replied to your post about tricker3G not working? Just re-read your post and you've tried everything I would suggest. The only thing you could try is not installing any other apps except slingplayer and tricker3G just in case one of your other apps is interfering, failing that, try voipover3G with a modified plist instead. Tricker3G also works with Skype, Joost and Fring - do you have one of those apps you can try it with to see if the problem lies with Tricker or your sling setup?
Good luck.He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

Fring and Skype work without issue over 3G, and Slingplayer is letting me log in, just failing to connect.
Remote viewing is working because i can connect over wifi on my iphone and my macbook. Just not working over 3G, although the 3G trick is working on my iPhone.
It must either be O2 blocking ports? Or someone somewhere blocking something for me.
Annoying thing is that my dad streams a hell of allot more than me so if anything he should have been caught
