No internal or external sounds, no mic

Hi guys,

I've been going over forums for days, but haven't come across quite the same problem - hence, no solution advice. I have no sound of any kind - rings, tones, music, youtube, etc - coming from either the external speaker OR the earphones (seems everyone with a sound problem can still use their headsets). Also, if I answer a call, they cannot hear anything, so I'm guessing the there's a mic problem as well. All other features & functions are working fine. It's as if it's on 'silent' & 'mute'. The last thing I did before this happened was to "transfer purchases" to itunes...but all was well for the few hours I used it immediately after doing that. It wasn't until the next morning that I noticed the problem.

-I checked all settings/mute switch
-I reset settings
-I tried plugging in headset jack 1,000 times (never even used it before this!)
-I blew out speakers & jack to clean any debris
-I've done soft & hard resets
-I've moved around the dock plug to maybe jog connection to speakers

Don't know what else to do. Think it's worth trying a restore or does sound more like a hardware problem? Appreciate any & all advice, suggestions, a long rope to hang myself with.....
