unlocked iphone fido canada

i have an unlocked 8gb iphone and i dont know how to add any apps from itunes store or anywhere else except from the the installer app that was already on my phone when i got it.
soft ware version 1.1.4 on the fido network in canada
do i need to update software i was told it would lock me any advise would be great thanks
