Restoring a previous backup via Time Machine?

Is there any way to restore an old iphone backup via Time Machine? i had to restore my iphone to new (in order to bring it to the Apple store...which is a whole other thread

and now it seems that my most recent backup didn't take and i just have an old one. I had some important SMS messages that I wanted to get back on my phone. Is there any way to restore one of those backups from Time Machine?

or does anyone know where the backup files are stored (in Leopard)?
