Default Just got iPhone, can you change text sound from poly to real song?

I just got my unlocked 2g iPhone yesterday to use on tmobile. still figuring it all out, but can you change the notification sound for a text message from the poly sounds that are in it-about 6 of them in phone-to a ringtone sound or sound i make?? I want a longer louder sound instead of the short sound it plays for when its in the other room so i can hear it.

Sure can. Several ways. You can download tones from Cydia or you can SSH your own into the phone but have to actually overwrite/replace one of the tones already on the phone. Or you can use an app like Customize - but it takes a little modding to get that app to work with the newer FW's. There is a thread floating around here explained what to do in order for the app to work.
