Question OMG Lost App Icons When Upgrading to 2.2.1 Using iTunes 8.1.1.10

Somebody Please help. I will try to be as descriptive as possible:

Ok, I have an unlocked iphone (1st Generation)on version 2.2 (using itunes 8.0.2.20) and I wanted to upgrade my phone to 2.2.1. So I backed up my phone, upgraded itunes to 8.1.1.10 and used WinPwn to update my iphone to 2.2.1. Everything went great (All the normal icons were there, even for Cydia)..

So I decided to load my backup file to my newly updated phone. Once that completed, that's where the problem came in..

Now when I slide to unlock my phone I only have 5 icons (not including the 4 icons on the dock) that I see which are: iPod, Youtube, Maps, iTunes, & App Store.

Now I tried several different things to resolve this:

    1. Downgrade back to 2.2 while using iTunes 8.1.1.10
    2. Upgrade & downgrade to 2.2.1 while using 8.0.2.20

    NONTHING FIXED THE PROBLEM

A friend asked me if I was using the Categories.App (which I was) and informed me that this was the problem why I am missing icons and to wipe your iphone clean again and before you do the backup install categories and it should work. Well I did that and it's still the same?

So my question is, how can I upgrade to 2.2.1 and reload a previous backup that was currently using Categories.app?

What should I do to fix this problem

How To Upgrade In iTunes | iPhone News, Help and Guides

The "backup" you do in iTunes does not back up your Cydia files. You NEVER use the upgrade feature on a jailbroken phone or you lose 500MB of data. This guide would be for next time you upgrade since you've pretty much lost everything now. Do a full restore to 2.2.1 (I assume you're on an official carrier and don't need to unlock) and then plug into iTunes to activate and then Quickpwn to jailbreak. At this point you will then manually re-download all your apps again.

No I didn't use the upgrade feature. I did the manually. I followed this guide: iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 2G iPhone Using QuickPwn (Windows)

At this point if Cydia is hidden then you're stuck and you'll have to start all over b/c there's no way to unhide your icons without installing poof, sb settings, or bossprefs. What happens when you make a backup is the com.apple.springboard.plist file is saved. This is essentially an image file of your springboard. When you restore from back-up this image file is replaced... but none of your Cydia apps are re-installed and this causes issues.

I also have a Mac Mini and just found this install that may work: iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 2G iPhone (Mac) [Updated 2.2.1]

I noticed at Step 6 (or 7) it allows you to load Cydia files directly to the install... I was just wondering do you think this may help to recover my files when I restore the backup? And if so, what apps from Cydia would I need to use?

I know there's got to be some kind of work around for this problem....

any Suggestions?? It would greatly appreciated....

OK... I also wanted to mention that when I did the upgrade and restored my backup I still can see all of my contacts, SMS messgages, and all of my settings was stored..

The only problem is that I am missing all the regular app icons that you would normally get when you upgrade and jailbreak

    Can someone please help?

There is a way to manually install cydia, but I don't know how you could get around the ssh issue. Maybe with Diskaid?

Dude.... seriously. Restore and start over.... this time set up your phone as new and then resync your contacts, pics and music. Then redownload your apps.

Here are a list of available options though:

    A quick summary of solutions:

    1) If you have Cydia still visible you can install Quickgold and simply launch the hidden apps. You can launch bossprefs, poof, or such and unhide it.

    2) You can install SBSettings and unhide any apps that are hidden.

    3) You can launch settings app and disable / reenable restrictions which should unhide most of everything. (You will then need to use poof, bossprefs, or sbsettings and rehide what you want hidden).

    4) If you cannot install anything because Cydia is hidden, you can use apt-get install quickgold from the SSH prompt

    5) In the most drastic case where you also do not have SSH, you can use iphone browser and delete the file located at /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist. Then reboot.

I've been trying to google a manually install cydia, but can't find anything.. I will look up more info on Diskaid and try to post the results on the outcome.

To say you are the moderator, you have no patience in assisting people. I've had my iphone for almost 2 years and never had a problem upgrading and restoring and when I finally do, all I get is a start over answer??

You got to be kidding me... Did I post this in the area of this forum? I'm not trying to be a pest, but I do have pictures, SMS text messages, and setting that took me months to set the way that I finally like just to say start all over.

listen to poseidon, he's a iphone gangster like some of the real people on here. his tips are the best way for you. its not a "problem". its a process... if you upgrade firmware, you re-download everything. its the smoothest/safest/most efficient way to be on the new firmware if you so choose. now only if you knew that 2.2.1 had nothing you can benefit from, you coulda stayed on 2.2 and kept all your work. now you have the same phone, a .1 at the end of your firmware, and you needa start all over and ask dumb questions like this.

    restore, jailbreak/unlock, get to downloading
    1.1.1>1.1.2>1.1.4>2.0>2.1>2.2>3.1>3.1.2 blackra1n'd

waitin on my white iphone 4

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize that this was the "Nut Sack" Riding Forum?? If I would have known this then I wouldn't have posted my serious question here, because I actually thought that forums was suppose to help with a problem not jock ride a moderator....

I never critcized Poseidon79 wealth of knowledge or discredit his advice, I just felt that he misunderstood what I was trying to say or accomplish. I think him and I are grown enough to resolve this miscommunication well enough with out jocking....

If you would like to comment on the problem at hand, you are more than welcome, but quite honestly I know that this won't happen due to the high level of "Nut Sack" riding I've received thus far...

Thanks for all the wonderful advice!

Thanks IvanPK! Now this is the kind of advice I need, as well as the positive responses from CaptainChaos & Poseidon79....

I will try all of this when I get home, but any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Try going to settings, general, restrictions and then toggle it on, then off. It sounds crazy, but worked for me.

Yeah no problem, the path is Settings->General->Reset->Reset Home Page Layout.
