can only detect some wifi networks

iphone 3g 16gb on 2.1fw. i am able to connect to the wifi network at my work and it works without fail. there is a network at my school that i cannot even detect with the native wifi program, but with the wifi stumbler from cydia i can detect it. my friend who is running 2.2.1 on his 3g was able to connect to my neighbors wifi network while my phone wouldnt even detect it, save for the wifi stumbler app, but it is virtually useless because it wont connect me. any ideas why his phone will connect while mine wont even detect? maybe upgrade my firmware?
