I have a question mark and a degree (celcius/fahrenheit) symbol beside it up near the battery.

It's an unlocked phone. Has Apple triggered something?

If either of you have weathericon installed from cydia, go to your settings, then weather icon (very bottom of screen) and turn off the "status bar temp". After you respring this should go away.
