Tired of being limited to black or white? You can buy aftermarket housings for your 3g in a few colors, but not many. Dont wanna pay a shop $150 to paint your baby some crazy cool color for you?
Well, do it yourself
I bought a broken 3g with a busted screen to fix, so I decided to "play" with it and see what kind of results I could get with a little splash of color.
Basically, here are the steps I took (Done with phone completely disassembled, housing only):
1. Wetsand thoroughly with 2000 grit sandpaper. Dry.
2. Apply 2 coats of "Adhesive Prep" (used to help adhere the paint).
3. Apple 3 coats of base color, 10 minutes between coats.
4. Wetsand again with 2000 grit sandpaper. Dry.
5. Apply 2-3 coats of clear, 10 minutes between coats.
Aint it purdy
And if you wanna see what you can do with an all scuffed and scratched up housing, but dont wanna buy a new one....
Check out this old contour case, basically the same as working with an oem housing.....with some wetsanding and a few coats of clear only......almost good as new
Left side of case is before........right is after. All for about 10 minutes of work.
OMG.. Is nicely done. That is like painting your nails with top coat to keep the shine and smooth. Im wondering if CPJR is a female. Even I cant do touch ups on my nails after 1 or 2 brushes. haha.. Well, dents will still even if I do touch ups on my phone.. I believe changing my back housing is a better idea for me now. T_T
I will say CPJR rock if he can do something with the apple logo on the back. Well, the orange iphone is still good to go.. It looks unique. You should have done bright yellow. Not too many ppl have bright yellow.
Now im drooling over your orange phone *edit*

You should do some unique colors like yellow or gold or maybe rainbow. Thats a little bit too much work.. I cant imagine you walking around with a gold iphone. Im sure people will come rob you and thought it was made of 24K gold. Well, design the phone and show us your skills man. Since you have the patience and the knowledge to do such good work on the orange or red or blue iphone. You should do some funky colors and then sell them? Maybe you can even sell the red iphone you have. Im sure there are some smart people can take apart and put in the new things on the iphone to make it work..
Well, keep up the work. Show us more!
Maybe stick the rhinestones on the apple logo or something or paint the apple logo if u can.
^Hahaha, I repaired that Red iphone and its long sold ...I buy em cheap and broken...and fix em. I also do housing work for people. This orange one will probably be sold in a few weeks too. As I play around with others.
This orange one was bought with a busted glass and broken camera....I already had the parts sitting here it fix it and then painted the housing, so for cheap I have the pretty phone you see here.
Awww.. I didnt know you sold them. If you have the red apple iphone 3g 16gb jailbroken, you already have two buyers waiting for you and even bomb your email for it because i told my friend about you. She may want you to change the back housing for her also.
I keep looking at this page and the blue and orange iphone page. Man.. ><
Im wondering how long my phone will take to become that pretty. ><
top quality man jus dont put it down. i have customized blue same colour as my car lol ive sold so many in uk just in blue
im working on new colours/designs everyday
tool kit; 1 air brush some 3000 merka pads and scotch! OOH it like blue peter......uk thing!
cpjr
what kinda of paint did you use? car paint, air brush, spray paint? which one ? i was thinking of doing that too but i didn't think any of those paints would apply thin enough to fit flush with the chrome bezel or camera, considering you also have to apply the clear coat. i'm just looking for something interesting to do with this old housing i got because now i got that red one from eBay you told me about.
This looks sweet! When I finally am able to get my iPhone I thinking I'm going to have to paint the back a royal blue that would be sweet! Thanks for the idea man.
House of Color is good paint but expensive. other then my iPhones i also LOVE to paint cars or whatever can hold paint it's actually what i do for a living. if i could only figure out how to mask off the little apple i wonder if there is anyway to buy a after market one that is either glued on or adhesive on one side.haha that would solve that problem huh?
