Bricked iPhone Question

My friend recently bought a 2G iPhone on ebay that seems to be bricked... Is there a way to check what firmware it's running so I can maybe fix it?

Only if you can get it to boot to the homescreen or show in Itunes. Otherwise, no. Unless....there is OpenSSH installed and it will actually allow you to SSH in.

Best thing to do is attempting one way or another to restore it to the current firmware.

That way, it really doesnt matter what version is on it.

Put it in DFU, restore with iTunes, rejailbreak. Other people have had success with using different USB ports to restore. Good luck.

Yeah that is exactly what I did last night and I got it working. But why is it that I am able to go straight to the main screen without activating it through iTunes?

If you jailbroke using quickpwn or pwnage, activation is part of the unocking process.
