Things You May Not Know
All right, folks, post up some tips and tricks!
- Button on top of the volume buttons on the side puts you in Silent mode.
- Sometimes if you're trying to download an email with a large attachment, its already there even though it just keeps spinning... just go out to your inbox and back to the message, and the attachment shows right up.

HAHAHAHA. NICE 1~!Button on top of the volume buttons on the side puts you in Silent mode.
iphone works with most Alpine Car stereo units; using the KCE-422i. Fully controllable from stereo head-unit, without airplane mode on, interference can be heard, not sure if this can be stymied via shielding, or if its happening whithin the iphone. The iphone will also work with the older KCA-420i units. Also iTrip. Ok i'm done.

P.S. About time we talk about something other than damned rumors...maybe now this site is gonna start rollin.

Nice info.
P.S. Now we actually have iPhones. Easier to talk about iPhones when we have iPhones.
Feel free to offer up your insights as well.

Sigh.. nobody else? OK well this is more of a useless hint, but and VERY OVERLOOKED App that has lived on our macs for years...is ImageCapture! Use this app to select which app launches when devices with photo content is plugged in. Also while on the topic, ImageCapture has some amazing sharing features, you can actually share your iphone on your network...transfer and view any pictures you took on your phone. activate it in the prefs. go to http://yourcomputername.local.:5100/ (or just your LAN/private IP) and have fun!

another one, if your iPhone crashes hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home button for approx. 10 seconds to force reboot the iPhone if it freezes (usually happens in Safari with other things running in the background).

Tapping the top menu bar returns you to the top of whatever scroll area you're in. This is super useful when browsing forums in Safari

You don't need to press that cumbersome top-edge button to wake your home.. just use the home button!
They keyboard works in widescreen mode when you're using safari with the phone on its side
You're not limited to just tipping the phone to the left-- if it's more comfortable for you to look at photos or websites by putting the phone on its right edge or even upside down, that works too!
Google Reader launched an addition to its website that gives you an iphone-formatted interface by default when you go there with your iphone. Don't fool with clunky webapps, switch to google reader and bring all your sites to you!
In CoverFlow mode for your music, if you tap the absolute upper-left pixel on the display, you enter file-browsing mode where you can move/delete your music and photos.Last edited by TomFrost; 07-02-2007 at 01:05 PM. Reason: lol, just kidding about that last one.

It would seem very Apple like to release the next version with 3G around Christmas time.

I write Mac only tutorials for the iPhone and own every model. My iPhones run on the following SIMs/networks: AT&T, GoPhone, H2O, O2, SimpleMobile, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Here's one I discovered this morning:
Under iPod -> more -> edit you can select the icons that appear at the bottom of the iPod app. Not lifesaving but cool. I wish u could customize all the buttons that way.

iPhone also works the the Dice Electronics iPod/car interface kit!
http://www.diceelectronics.com/ipod_integration.htm
I installed one in my BMW 330i and it works fantastic. This plays an iPod through the stock stereo head unit with track forward/back controls (on radio or steering wheel), displays the track/artist text on the radio display, and powers/charges the iPod - all through the dock connector.
The only difference so far using the iPhone is that it turns it into sort of an iPod-only mode whereby no other functions are available... not that you should be using anything but the phone portion while driving anyways but I haven't received any calls while having it attached this way yet.
The audio connection I have always believed to be digital or at least shielded extremely well b/c the 5G iPod 30GB I've been using for the past year or so is always crystal clear. The iPhone sounded the same as the iPod and just as good in both airplane mode and normal mode.
Once I test receiving a call with it this way (if it is indeed possible to do so) I will post info.

Ah, good to know. I am glad the iPhone is functioning well with existing iPod accessories... I bet it throws the phone part off because of the possibility for interference with audio equipment.

David Pogue has posted a new iPhone tip to his Missing Manual Web site: If you want to type a period or other puncuation, simply touch and hold the ".?123" key then slide your finger to the desired button. When you've selected the punctuation, the keyboard automatically changes back to the normal character entry mode.

That's good to know. I had also noticed it changes back to alpha character entry mode automatically once you hit the space bar after entering punctuation, which you would more than likely do anyway. The sliding method is handy if you don't want to enter a space after the punctuation character, like a dollar amount ($499), a quotation "FakeSteve is hilarious!" or a specific time (4:27 AM).

I have found myself cupping my hand on the bottom of the phone to redirect sound while I am watching a video. That will redirect the sound towards me. It makes a big difference in the perceived volume.
