Ok, so i have a small issue with my iPhone. I called up AppleCare, and they authorized a replacement (even without me having a valid AT&T phone number). The replacement has shipped, there is a hold on my credit card.
Now, I obviously want to make sure that it gets covered by the warranty, and I dont get screwed because it is unlocked. I know I can simply restore via iTunes to 2.2 (or 2.2.1 for that matter) to remove the jailbreak. I plan on doing that of course (i will probly update to 2.2.1 just to be safe). However, my concern is that this will not remove the unlock, and that when they get my old phone back, they will test it and see that it is still unlocked.
1.) Would they likely even check to see if it is unlocked? And could they (do they have non-AT&T sims laying around to test do you think?)
2.) If this IS a valid concern, what should I do to "re-lock" it?
darkpassenger, will you follow up on your experience? I'm in the same situation (only with 3.0), and want to be sure a restore is sufficient to hide the unlock. I would not want to be charged $400.
Klonation, I have an Iphone 3gs still under factory warranty, (2 months old). I was having problems with dropped calls. I installed OS 3.1.2 from itunes and marched into the Apple store with my problem. They replaced the phone on the spot with a new one, (with OS 3.01). They don't have ability to test sim cards. I know because my sim was about 4 years old and scratched up and I asked them to test it. They said I had to go the ATT store and that ATT would replace the sim free of charge. This is true. Hope this removes your fears. My 3GS was previously jailbroken and unlocked.
if you send in the phone for repair make sure to restore to the latest(!) firmware before you do.
first of all that will get rid of every jailbreak or unlock or whatever, secondly if you have an old firmware on the device they will just install the newest firmware and sent it back without giving you a replacement!
