My iPhone Screen Dims Eratically- Help!

I have an iphone that is pwned to 2.0.2 currently and unlocked to work on t-mobile. I was using the phone and the screen fades to black even though I had not touched anything. It is woken up simply by touching the screen.

I let this go by once, but then it repeated to do it again. Two minutes later, i plugged it in to my dock to play my music while I did other things. The dock would not play music from the iphone and the iphone screen began to dim again. About 5 times in a minute.

I could really use some help. Thanks to whomever answers.

This happened once while using Safari unplugged and ~7 times when on the iPod dock.

I already did a reboot, ans it still does it.

Do you have a case on it? The case could be blocking the proximity sensor.
