Any way to put backgrounds on without winterboard?
I wanna put a background behind my icons but I was just wondering if there was a way other than Winterboard? I dont want to change anything else.
Just wondering if there's something that won't slow my phone down as much.
Thanks!

For all us non-programmers out here, we've asked this before and the answer had always been the same. A lot of technical discussions about it on MMI
Wish it were possible

It's possible, but in a very haphazard way. You'd need to download the screen template from the downloads section, split your background pic into 16 separate components, and overlay your icon images over each one in photoshop (or similar) and then put them back on the iPhone. Not worth the trouble really.
Summerboard used to do it, but Nullriver went bye byeGet "iPod & iTunes for Dummies", it'll change your life.

So if I just change just the background, nothing else, will my phone be noticeably slower... or is that only if you go all out and put a theme on, change docks, sounds, etc...

The best way to answer this ..... is to ask you to try it and then you tell us
There have been threads from both extremes (no noticeable effect, to almost complete unusability (haha). It's pretty darn easy to try. Give it a shot. Nothing to loose but knowledge. In the end, most are willing to 'endure' the pain to have the gain

I don't see how people don't notice battery life and performance changes with WinterBoard. Battery life decreases noticably and Settings.app takes an extra eternity to load with WB. It makes sense, really... You're running an entire extra layer (MobileSubstrate) that the thing wasn't designed to do. WB rocks, but you do pay a price.

there is no doubt it slows things down and decreases battery life.

Ok ... I'm game for trying this. A newbie, but I have JB and SSHed into my week old iPhone. I've been searching for hours for this so some questions:
1) Is the MMi Iphone Skinner defunct (at least as far as 2.2.1 is concerned). Tried to use it but got browser errors when tried to "create skin". Never got to the point of trying the perl script to get it on there. Couldn't find much in the way of documentation.
2) If I wanted to take the approach quoted, but the default icons are ok with me, do I still need to overlay 16 icons ? Does it matter which icons ? Does this need to be repeated for each page worth (I've got 7 pages). Once running, can the icons be moved in the usual way ?
As you can tell from my Q's, I'm not getting some relationship between the background/template and the icons.
Sorry for all the newb questions ... i HAVE been searching for hours, and it's hard to separate old 1.x.x search results except after you get excited and then see it is a year-and-a-half old. Any links to some existing explanations for 2.x.x would be much appreciated.

Why dont u guys try KATE .. I know there are people who have issues... but for me it has been the best application. I know the unlimited verison...
you can modify ur iphone so well and its works so well with winter board too...

KATE is stupid and is full of spyware dont use it.
and the whole summerboard overly icon way is way more confusing then winterboard.
For me at least it dose not impact the speed. Mobile substrate is installed with cydia so u have an extra layer anyways.
and for ur second question if u do it that way it will make it mess up ur theme if u move icons.
PS where the hell do u get summerboard for 2.2?

seems fine... when i exit an app, it doesn't give me a smooth transition anymore... the wallpaper appears and bam! the icons appear. it's chill though, im not gonna gripe with a tiny nearly unnoticeable slow-down... i like my theme... i could only take the stock look for so long... not to mention the fugly *** icons some apps come with

im not sure if i understand what you're trying to do. but the way i do this. i have the clear icons from cydia. so i keep my whole springboard completely clear. so all i see is the background. and then i downloaded from the appstore "background" for free. download whatever background i want and in winterboard click on "user wallpaper" go into my settings and choose my wallpaper. so instead of getting a new theme i just grab whatever wallpaper i want and its like having a new theme everytime.
**edit** only issue i have with this is that the wallpaper i pick gets used on both my lockscreen AND my springboard. so you get the same wallpaper on both. havent been able to solve this but i doesnt worry me too much.Last edited by itsjustlenny; 02-16-2009 at 09:57 PM.
