1st to 3G replacement by Apple??
Hello all, I have a question regarding my 1st gen iphone warranty.
I currently own an unlocked 16GB iphone in Colombia (2 carriers already have the 3G iphones legally here), bought in the US. The warranty goes until April 2009, and I have noticed a weird sound with the vibration.
I was wondering what is the best way to "virginize" the iPhone, so I can take it to the Apple Store on a trip I have in 2 weeks, and tell them about the problem, and if there is a way, do you think Apple will replace the iPhone with a new 3G one? since they no longer make the 1st gen ones?
Anything I should say when taking the iPhone?
Thanks in advance!

no, they wont replace it with the 3g,they still have 1st generations for warranty purposes and before you take it just restore in itunes and should be fine.
You will need an AT&T # and account for warranty, i hope you have this because thats the first thing they ask you.
good luck

Chris, thx.
One thing, I do have an ATT number and account, but it's with my new 3G iphone... so, what then? I was planning on telling themthat I had that 1G for repaid cingular plans... for my mother. The 1G was never asssigned to that account, I bought it from apple when you could buy the phone without associating it to a contract.Last edited by red_pill; 01-15-2009 at 02:06 PM.

I don't think you can say that because they know right away that you unlock the phone before,Maybe you can say that you using the 1st generation and sold the 3g but im not sure..
You should wait for more people to reply to your post with more opinions.

Can't you use the 1st gen with pay-as-you-go?? I think you can, thing is, I cannot say i'm using the 1G cause it was never registered at their store... could it be activated before through iTunes without them knowing?
Thx.

Dont tell em crap. The warranty is NOT dependent on activation.

^No chance in....well....you know where.
You will get a 2g, same as yea got now. They arent going to run out....because the one you give them will get "refurbed" and turned into a replacement for someone else....see the cycle, they wont run out.

^It doesnt matter, you can take them an iphone with NO simcard in it....and the "connect to itunes to activate" screen on it....and its still under warranty.

thx a lot guys, so its clear to me that you dont need activation for warranty, just checked the apple site and it says clearly that...so no hopes for a 3G, but at least, a new 2G... oh well, sounds good anyway... i guess I get a new 1 year warranty too?? thx a lot to ALL!

Yea warranty starts over too.
The only thing that will completely confuse them is if you bought a 2g 16gigger last year on Feb 29 (leap year) and had to get it swapped last week like I did......
They couldnt tell me if the warranty is good till Feb 28 or Mar 1 of 2010

It picks up where the old phone left off, or for 90 more days, whichever is longer.
