iPhone and iPod FM transmitter

A friend plugged her 1st gen iPhone into her iPod FM transmitter. It worked a few minutes then her iPhone turned off. Turning it back on, the battery gets hot and her screen goes through a rainbow of colored bars. It never turns on.

What is wrong and can I fix it?

This didn't seem to work. Thanks though. I think one of the boards is fried, or the battery is shot.

Awhile back, the phone would turn on but only display the random colors. Now, the phone won't turn on at all, even after being plugged into the wall adapter for a day. I will see if the replacing the battery will help.

Hope I don't scratch up the black housing I put on it!
