are iPhones from Wal-Mart easier to cancel?
Specifically, I want to buy an iPhone and cancel the service and not return the phone. However, I thought maybe that it would be easier to convince AT&T that I "returned' the phone back to the store so they don't charge me the early cancellation fee (even they are not supposed to anyway since it would be within the 30 day trial period. any thoughts on this?

Forget Walmart. This is what you do:
1. Go to the Apple Store.
2. Tell them you would like to buy a iPhone.
3. They will go to the back to get it.
4. When they bring it out, and this is the most crucial part; Grab it and run for the parking lot.
5. As you are running try to knock down as many people as you can getting out of the Apple Store.
6. Don't use a car to get away. Run all the way (Run through wooded areas if possible).
7. Don't head home. Go to a hide out for a least 2 weeks.
8. After 2 weeks and you return home, jailbreak and unlock the iphone.
9. Bask in the glory of your new iphone.

P.S. I have done this 5 times already and getting past step 5 is the hardest (I have never been able to).

however, nowhere in the contract does it say that if you buy the iphone and cancel within 30 days without returning the phone, they will charge you the early termination fee. so if they did, i'm sure you could argue that with ATT. It would be a pain the butt, but you could argue it.

I remember reading that AT&T would offer iPhones for $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB without contract but I don't know if that was official or speculation.

As of right now....you HAVE to sign a 2-year service agreement with ATT to buy the phone. And there is no "clever" way of gettng around it.
To cancel the contract, you pay an ETF.

You know the one good thing about Walmart carrying the phone is that we'll have many more case options locally than just Best Buy and ATT. They'll also be cheaper as Walmart famously haggles with suppliers to get prices low.
I think it's a win/win.Screw #Winning, I'm #Juanning

If you use Stealths idea, I recommend bringing some bacon bits to throw off the hounds AT&T will release.

I would think that if I told Wal-Mart that I returned the iphone, it would be hard to challenge it...

I can promise you both Apple and AT&T thought this through before they released it to any other retail stores like Best Buy and Walmart.
Apple has a huge contract to uphold with AT&T, Im sure they worked out all the "loop holes", or someone would have figured a way out, before now.
