You could try restoring it to factory settings with itunes and then removing the SIM card before you actually jailbreak it.

I don't have much experience with quickpwn. Perhaps you should just try a different program such as iLiberty or ZiPhone

^^^^uhhhh no. not with 2.2 or any 2.x software. what you need to do first is put the phone into DFU recovery mode BEFORE doing ANYTHING else. do some searching and youll find how to do that. once the phone is in DFU mode THEN follow the steps in the following guide to get you up and running

iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 2G iPhone Using QuickPwn (Windows)

Have you tried resetting network settings and rebooting?

If you put your sim card in the phone, will it do the same thing? (Trying to see if it is a sim card issue)

upgrade to 2.2 many of the signal issues were fixed with this. the issue only seems to happen when the screen is off? try doing the same thing you did with your phone with your dads phone.

I have been researching this for 20+ minutes. I will get back with you if I can come up with something.
